Classic Woody Woodpecker Comes to OTA

MeTV is set to bring a beloved animated character back to the small screen next month. Starting on September 2, Woody Woodpecker and his friends will grace the network’s Saturday Morning Cartoons lineup.

MeTV recently acquired the rights to over 360 classic animated shorts featuring Woody Woodpecker and his pals. The series includes a mischievous woodpecker named Woody, as well as characters like Chilly Willy, The Beary Family, Inspector Willoughby, and Any Panda.

For longtime fans, Woody Woodpecker adds a delightful touch of nostalgia. The show originally ran from 1934 to 1972, earning a dedicated following. Even today, merchandise featuring the iconic woodpecker is still available in stores like Walmart and Target, as well as online retailers such as Amazon and Etsy. For collectors, Funko Pop figures of the mischievous bird are also an option.

MeTV’s impressive collection of Woody Woodpecker and Friends shorts features some notable episodes. Among them are Woody’s debut appearance in “Knock Knock,” as well as classics like “The Beach Nut,” “Wet Blanket Policy,” and “The Barber of Seville,” which introduced Woody’s iconic opening routine. In fact, one episode titled “The Dizzy Acrobat,” released in 1943, even received an Academy Award nomination for Best Short Subject in a cartoon. To get a taste of what’s in store, a teaser trailer can be found on YouTube.

Saturday Morning Cartoons on MeTV offers a three-hour block of non-stop animated entertainment. Alongside Woody Woodpecker, viewers can also enjoy other beloved characters such as Popeye and Pals, Tom & Jerry, and Bugs Bunny & Friends.

The full Saturday schedule for MeTV’s cartoon lineup includes:

7:00 AM – Popeye & Pals

7:30 AM – The Tom & Jerry Show

8:00 AM – Woody Woodpecker & Friends (Beginning September 2)

9:00 AM – Bugs Bunny & Friends

In addition to Woody Woodpecker, MeTV has secured the rights to four animated shorts by Tex Avery, a renowned director, writer, and producer from the “golden age” of U.S. animation. These shorts include “I’m Cold,” “Crazy Mixed Up Pup,” “The Legend of Rockabye Point,” and “Sh-h-h-h-h.”

MeTV can be accessed on broadcast OTA television, covering 98% of the U.S., as well as through select cable and satellite providers.
