Amazon Garage Delivery Makeover

Amazon Introduces Fee for In-Garage Delivery Option, Angering Prime Members

In a surprising move, Amazon has announced that it will start charging a small fee for its popular In-Garage Delivery service for Prime members. Starting October 4, Prime members will be required to pay a $1.99 fee every time they request a garage drop-off on a day other than their designated Amazon Day. This change has left many customers frustrated and questioning the convenience of the service.

The In-Garage Delivery option has been lauded for its ability to protect packages from porch pirates and inclement weather. By utilizing a compatible smart-home garage, delivery drivers could gain one-time access and securely place the package inside. However, this added security and convenience is now at risk of losing its appeal due to the new fee structure.

While Amazon suggests consolidating orders to be delivered on the customer’s designated Amazon Day in order to avoid the fee, this may not always be feasible for those who require more urgent deliveries. Those willing to wait until their designated Amazon Day can enjoy the service for free. However, for those who need their packages sooner, they will have to settle for leaving it outside their door or designating a less exposed drop-off spot.

This change in policy comes shortly after Amazon raised the minimum purchase cost for free shipping for non-Prime members to $35. The company is strategically increasing revenue and cutting costs during these challenging economic times. In fact, Amazon has already laid off approximately 27,000 workers, representing about 8% of its corporate workforce, earlier this year.

As the company finds ways to navigate these economic challenges, it seems that Prime members are feeling the brunt of the changes. While In-Garage Delivery initially offered a secure and worry-free solution, the new fees may deter customers from utilizing this service. Only time will tell how this controversial decision will impact Amazon’s loyal customer base.
