Asus has unveiled its Back-to-the-Future (BTF) concept at CES, showcasing new graphics cards that eliminate the need for auxiliary power connectors. The BTF initiative is targeted at DIY enthusiasts aiming for a sleek and tidy PC build, with the goal of concealing unsightly connectors and cables. This includes motherboards, graphics cards, and cases designed to keep connectors out of sight.
For instance, BTF motherboards feature all connectors mounted on the back of the board to maintain a clean appearance. In addition, Asus has introduced new GPU options, such as the ROG Strix GeForce RTx 4090 BTF Edition and the TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super BTF White Edition. These cards opt for a high-power connector that plugs directly into compatible motherboards, eliminating the need for 16-pin external power connectors.
Although proprietary connectors may not be ideal, Asus’ approach has garnered attention for its potential to simplify PC builds. The decision to remove 12VHPWR and integrate power directly from the motherboard could enhance airflow and result in a more polished installation. This move also raises questions about why a similar strategy has not been adopted sooner, given its potential benefits in terms of security and aesthetics.
However, the success of Asus’ BTF concept will depend on wider industry adoption and a universal standard for manufacturers. Without industry-wide alignment and support, the impact of the BTF initiative may be limited. It remains to be seen whether other manufacturers will embrace a similar approach, but for now, Asus is leading the way in reimagining the future of PC builds.
